consumer behavior

Calculating Consumer Happiness at Any Price

NYT - June 29, 2009 - great article on our assumptions of pricing and consumer behavior.

last summer, at a parma house party at my place in tordenaso, my roommates go a keg of this ridiculously good german beer, ganter. since, i have been on a quest to find it... or any information about it... so far i have turned up a recent wikipedia post and their offical website (which is in german, making it not helpful). i'm thinking i will need to just go on an epic journey to the land of great beers.

s. african wines and burnt rubber

A Whiff of Controversy and South African Wines
NYT - June 28, 2009

STELLENBOSCH, South Africa — Suppose the wine label said: This fruity red blend is full-bodied with tastes of sweet mulberry, spicy mocha and burnt rubber. The aroma lingers like the skid marks at an auto accident.

South Africa is the world’s ninth largest producer of wine, an up-and-comer in the global marketplace, the winner of more than its share of accolades in international competitions. How, then, have some of its wines been linked to a stench commonly coughed up by a junkyard fire: the bouquet of burnt rubber?

Most of the answer lies within the lively prose of a British wine critic, Jane MacQuitty of The Times of London. In late 2007, she tasted a run of South Africa’s flagship reds and wrote that half were tainted by a “peculiar, savage, burnt rubber” odor. In a later column she called a selection of the country’s best-rated reds “a cruddy, stomach-heaving and palate-crippling disappointment.”

Here in the glorious wine lands of the Western Cape, where the grape vines grow against a backdrop of stunning mountains, her comments were infuriating and perplexing and even derided as loony. No particular reds had been singled out by Ms. MacQuitty. Exactly which wines carried the scent of smoking steel-belted radials?

“All of us were slandered by a very general statement,” said André van Rensburg, the celebrated winemaker at the Vergelegen Wine Estate.

Wine aficionados began taking sides: yes, there is definitely a telltale rubbery odor, and no, it is all in your imagination. South Africans who dismissed the criticism were demeaned as burnt rubber denialists. Worse, they were accused of “cellar palate,” being so accustomed to tainted wine that their taste buds now welcomed it.

lame

across the universe... kind of cheesy... kind of bad... kind of a waste of two hours. i like the beatles as much as the next guy, but i would much prefer to just listen to them for two hours than watch broadway-esk solo versions of all their songs forced together into a cheesy plot that looks like a bad pink floyd video remake. some great things should just be left to stand alone.

do what feels right

summarizes the article: The Road to Success, Paved With Bad Advice
In the 2003 Tour de France, Armstrong consistently beat his rival, Jan Ullrich, and commentators, Dr. Berry noted, said it was in part because he could pedal so fast. Ullrich pedals slower but uses bigger gears. “What if Lance had never been there and Jan had won?” Dr. Berry said. “Would people say that the reason he is so good is that he pushes a big gear?”

as zack recalls, we had:

- albacore
- blue fin tuna
- big eye tuna
- white tuna (my favorite)
- three types of salmon
- fried shrimp head
- raw shrimp sushi
- monkfish liver (three different ways)
- quail egg and sea urchin sushi
- grilled octopus salad (ridiculously good)
- two types of mackerel
- an egg dessert
- plus a few other randoms

the head sushi chef prepared fish after fish. we ate and ate.

i definitely recommend it. shumi has changed my perspective on what japanese sushi is supposed to really be like.

why pratt

is retarded...

so i wanted to take summer classes. i have 11 fucking credits to finish. pratt waited until TODAY to send an email to all students saying they'd be offering some summer classes- they're supposed to start MAY 18th. the email should have gone out back in march so kids could actually plan these courses into their schedule instead of takin them on a fucking whim and dicking over the people, like me, who need to have these classes filled in order to graduate.

point being- there will not be enough people enrolled in the classes i need, and will not be graduating until december.

so instead, i'm heading to san diego for a couple months. peace out pratt douchers.

so while plastering williamsburg with fliers last night around 2am, two lovely nypd officers decided we had promoted enough of chelsea automatic and decided to write us a summons (ticket-ish required court appearance deal) for 'unlawful posting of signs.'

apparently you can't do anything here without paying for it in some fashion.

thing is, there is no amount/ sum of money required to pay... google has no answers... anyone know how serious this might be of a fine??

bowling

this was the only photo that was post worthy. first time really using my flash - i can't say i'm in love with it.

it's an outrage

overstatement. still annoying though...

why is senior year of college pointless for someone who has a full portfolio and is losing opportunities to freelance because of assumed course loads?

well, pratt is full of professors who truly 'care about the work you produce,' when really the majority are just trying to get pieces that fulfill their terribly subjective opinions of what advertising 'should be.'

pratt fails to pair art directors and copywriters. probably the biggest mistake on their part. why do you think kids from miami ad school crank out such top notch books? collaboration and an actual creative process.

oh, and i bet their advisement staff could actually tell them whether required classes would be offered in the summer so they could figure out whether to tell agencies that they will be done with school in august or december. kind of a big difference.

shred your extras

for the second time in the past month my work has been ripped off.

first - the chelsea smile logo i made up for the band was stolen by an l.a. based group, with a very similar name, that had forced the cbus group to change up their name. so the band took it upon themselves to utilize my fucking logo without getting any rights or approval from me or the band i made it for.

second - today, a cheating, moral-free, mother fucker in my type iv class decided he didn't feel like completing the assignment. so he went fishing in the recycling bin of the print lab for treasures he could call his own. he grabbed five of my compositions that i had tossed out due to incorrect sizing. this cockbag brought the work in to present as his own. my larger color prints were three people away from his. so when we got to cheater's work i called him out hardcore. the teachers decided to just have some strong words about not copying and when you can 'call something your own.'

the irony - one of the pieces the kid stole read:
PAST ISSUE CURRENT PROBLEM

i think the fucker should have been booted from the class. i will now trounce that douche in every critique to come. i hate nothing more than liars, thieves, and cheaters.

best_burger. ever.

go to a meat market.

buy 1/3 veal, 1/3 pork, 1/3 beef mix. they normally come in one package in three 1/3lb rows of ground meat (avoid the 'meatloaf' mixed kind from supermarkets - that shit is nasty).

also pick up some fresh bread (a sourdough preferably). buy mozzarella or provolone.

buy some sriracha, kupi mayo, and soy sauce (most likely all found at an asian specialty store).

my recipe:
- mix the meat together with italian herbs and spices, then toss that either on the grill or in a medium heat pan
- slice up the sourdough for your bun, then melt the cheese under a broiler or in a toaster oven
- while the bread and cheese are toasting and melting (respectively) and the burger hybrid is cooking, mix up your sauce
- to make the spicy mayo, use equal parts sriracha and kupi mayo, then add a dash of soy sauce
- when the burger is cooked to preference, throw it all together and prepare yourself to be disappointed in every burger you eat from your last bite on

ps - add bacon if you want, but honestly the 1/3s of everything have so much flavor going for it already that it is kind of unnecessary

super bowel ads

the economy is on everyone's minds. the media won't let us forget how america is racking up a debt that will soon make our quality of life comparable to the great depression. our government is fucked. obama or not - democrat at the helm, or terrible republican leaving an epic path of destruction behind.

why this debt bullshit effected the quality of the super bowl ads... i wish i could tell you.

at a time when every person's moral has dropped and almost everyone has a chip on their shoulder (after watching wall street squander their life savings), you'd think the creatives of the world could produce some comic relief. i'm not sure if this was the clients fault (which is possible, they have absolute final say. if they want something lame and unoriginal, they'll get it), or if the agency employees were just too concerned about losing their jobs if they brought something eccentric to the table... but somebody shit the bed.

i didn't get the pleasure of watching the super bowl due to complications with trying to figure out how to pay my cable bill without the required pin (not that it really matters. football is kind of lame). instead i got to suffer this morning, watching the horror show of bad ad after bad ad unfold.

there were a few gems (ish). i linked them below with a critique of why.

E*trade
http://superbowlads.fanhouse.com/quarter2/Etrade-Babies/2409738

E*trade kept their message, and built on it in a successful fashion. they stayed true to the product and dealt with the current economy in a humorous way instead of saying something as lame as 'times are tough' or 'money is tight.' the super bowl, like all sporting events, is an escape. people don't want to be reminded of their current failings and money losses.

Hulu
http://superbowlads.fanhouse.com/quarter4/Hulu-Alec_Baldwin/2409778

CP+B represent. i know i should be reppin' this one a lot harder, but i only found the last fifteen seconds to be what carried this to being 'good'. since i do know a large number of the creatives who worked on it, i feel a bit more obligated to defend it.

Cash4Gold
http://superbowlads.fanhouse.com/quarter4/Cash4Gold-MC_Hammer/2409774

did not think i'd be writing about this one. i enjoy their play of using MC Hammer, an obvious life failure, to subtly tie into the economy and liquidation of luxuries that our nation is experiencing. plus the line, " i could get cash for this gold medallion of me wearin' a gold medallion" slays me.

even finding three ads i liked was a challenge. Coke Zero can get an honorable mention for their play on the classic coke commercial (http://superbowlads.fanhouse.com/quarter4/Coca_Cola-Zero/2409773).

overall a very disappointing start to the year. i hope obama can offer a creative stimulus for the ad industry. that show of the 'cutting edge best' was just sad.
