cultural difference:
ciao - it is the informal for hello and goodbye in italian.
every time someone walks into the office here they say 'ciao' to every single person in the office. i don't understand why you can't just say, the american equivalent of, 'hello everyone...'
i'm unsure whether i come off as rude when i don't say 'ciao' to every co-worker, but acknowledge each seating section (which is still 4 to 5 'ciao's every time i enter or exit the office). maybe they think i'm an unfriendly american, but i prefer that over sounding like the italian equivalent to the target commercials.
